The Fall season was always a little bittersweet, as we prepared our gardens for the first real frost, and took the last harvests of tomatoes and pumpkins, squash and peppers. It always left me wishing I had a way to garden year-round. So when we purchased what would be our first plastic greenhouse, I was skeptical that I could get used to the idea of tending to living, growing plants in the dead of a Tennessee winter. But as time slowly moved through the months of January and February, I still had an abundant crop of baby lettuces, herbs, and yes, even some sweet, ripe cherry tomatoes!

We always think of winter as not providing enough of what plants need to survive, but the truth is, if plants can be kept warm and are given the right amounts of nutrients, the big ol’ sun can still provide enough light to get things growing, and greenhouse kits can maximize the use of the sun for heating and growing. So now, as my neighbor puts his garden to bed for the year and ponders another winter trapped indoors waiting for spring to arrive, I am out tending to a thriving little piece of heaven and loving every minute of it.
