The reason for this was mainly because internet service was the only thing the providers offered. Today, that has changes and it has changed dramatically. Internet service providers not only offer high speed internet; they also offer television and phone service as well. And of course, such items are offered in bundles where discounts can be procured. Such discounts make service that is already attractive, even more attractive, and that is not an easy feat!
