If you live in North America, you’ve probably seen an American Robin and where I live the first robin of the year means that spring is finally on its way.  These birds live all across the continent, and they’re a very common sight in birdbaths, feeders, and yards.  American Robins can often be seen on the ground trying to pull earthworms up for breakfast.  These cheery little birds are quite popular with bird watchers, and they’re pretty easy to notice, too.  The American Robin has a bright orange breast that is pretty distinctive, as is their happy little song.  Listening to the Robins chirping in the morning is a nice background to your breakfast.  American Robins appear in cities, towns, and forests—you can find them just about anywhere in North America starting in early spring. The love of my life (affectionately known as Pookie Bear), and I live in a rather dilapidated brownstone in Queens.  We are syrupy sappy romantics at heart that went to Paris for our honeymoon and it is highly likely we will never be normal again!  While in Paris, we visited Monet’s Gardens.  Say it aloud, “Monet’s Gardens”, just makes you sigh doesn’t it?  Anyway back here in the good ole US of A we were looking for a way to put a pretty face on the scant area loosely referred to as our yard and Pookie Bear found the Monet Arbor on line.  It was affordable, durable and best of all very French feeling and very romantic!  Once it arrived we couldn’t get to a plant market fast enough! Last year I decided to take on the challenge of a new job. It would be a job like none other that I had ever had, home schooling my 8 year old boy. I am not a certified teacher but my heart was led to teach him at home. It was the greatest challenge I had ever accepted.

The first part of the year was filled with exciting adventures; making volcanoes and Solar System replicas. I worried that I would not be good enough for my son, as a teacher, but I soon realized that getting to know him in a very different way proved to be the best job I have ever had. I found a certain peace being at home with him and learning right along side of him. I was realizing him as a person, and not just a kid.

Of course, we struggled at times, but we also shouted victory once we would master a certain skill. We would grumble over lengthy math lessons, but we would jump with excitement over learning the different kinds of birds that were in our yard. I was not only teaching him; he was teaching me as well!
